2010-2011 Hingham Youth Hockey Registration and Tryouts Download this Page as a Word Document On-Line Registration Instructions: Login with your Member ID and password here: Player Login Page If you cannot remember your login information and you have received an email from HYH about registration for the upcoming season, click on “forgot password” in the login section of the website, and enter your email address. The login information for all players associated with that email address will be sent to you. If you have not received an email about registration by March 19, 2009 at any of your email addresses, and you have been in the program anytime over the past 5 years, please email webmaster@hyhockey.com with the name of the player(s) so we can update your email address in our system. We will respond to your email when this has been completed. At this point, you may then retrieve the login information by clicking on “forgot password”. If you have not participated at the Instructional/Cross-Ice level or higher, please select "Create an Account" on the Player Login Page to begin the on-line registration process. Important! Once you have your account information, it is important to maintain ONE account for EACH player you have in the program. This will be the account we tie to your player's team, USAH, future payments, email, etc. If you have multiple children in the program, you must log out of one account to access the other. As we started with this past season’s registration, HYH will continue with the USA Hockey suggested process of having individual members register with USA Hockey and with the Affiliate program (Mass Hockey) on the USA Hockey website. The complete registration process will be a three step process: The first step in the process (registering on the HYH site to participate in the HYH program) will remain the same as it does today. The second step in the process will be for each individual to register their player with USA Hockey (and they will automatically register with Mass Hockey as well). In case you were not aware, one of the reasons players are required to be registered with USA hockey is insurance. As part of the USA Hockey fee, USA hockey provides each member with an insurance coverage (please check the USA Hockey website for details of the coverage). The USA fee is $30 per player and the Mass Fee is $5 per player. Note: this second step in the registration process DOES NOT replace the first step of registering for HYH participation on the HYH site and is required in order to play. The third step in the process will be to pay any remaining balances or dues. Step 1 - Registration Fee Payment Instructions: 1. Login to your account from the Player Login Page above or go to: https://www.hyhockey.com/registration.html 2. Enter your Member ID and password. (If you do not know your ID or password, click on "Forgot Password" or "Click Here" in the Help section to have your member ID and password sent to you via email) 3. When you have logged in to your account, click on "Signups & Payments". 4. Scroll down to Available Signups, click on “Signup” and follow the instructions. During the on-line process, you will have the option to make the minimum registration fee payment or any amount up to the full season dues by: a. Paying on-line using a Credit card (VISA, Master Card or Discover) b. Mailing a check with a copy of the off line/check payment page or the registration reference number to: Hingham Youth Hockey, P.O. Box 80, Hingham MA 02043 c. Bringing check, cash, or a credit card and a copy of the off line/check payment page or the registration reference number to your players first night of tryouts. Note: Families with outstanding dues from the 09-10 season will not be allowed to tryout until they have been paid in full. 2010-2011 Season Information: To: All Hingham Youth Hockey Parents From: Hingham Youth Hockey Coaching Committee Re: 2010-2011 Season Registration and Tryouts Tryouts for the 2010-2011 hockey season are scheduled to begin March 29, 2010. Enclosed in this mailing is information including a recap of the Tryout Process, the tryout schedule, and a Coaching Application form. Please take the time to review this material. Hopefully, the information in this packet will answer most of your questions, but if not, please feel free to contact any member of the Coaching Committee with any questions or concerns:
There are some new programs and policies for the 2010-2011 season. They include the following: 1. Online registration. We urge all families to complete the online registration through the web site at www.hyhockey.com. All players who participated in the 2009-2010 season already have their information in the database. You just need to log in to access your information and register. If you don’t have or cannot recall your player’s user name, follow the instructions to have it emailed to you. If you have changed your email address, send an email to webmaster@hyhockey.com with the name of the player you want to register. We will update the website with the new email and then the login information will be emailed back to you. 2. Full and Half-time goaltenders at the Mite Travel, Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget levels will not be assessed dues for the 2010-2011 season. Goalies will be required to pay a registration fee that will be refunded during the season as the goalie demonstrates his or her commitment to the position at the Half-Time or Full Time level. Full-time goaltenders’ refundable dues are set at $300 for the season. Half–time goaltenders are required to pay half of the total fees ($475) and play half the league games as a goaltender. All full and half–time goaltenders must be registered with the Goalie Coordinator and Tryout Coordinator. 3. Tryout Absences - If a player is unable to attend any of his/her scheduled tryout sessions, you must call the Level Coordinators to inform him immediately. There are procedures in place for handling absences, which will be explained to the parents at that time. 4. Players wishing to be in the C level do not need to attend tryouts, but they do need to register and pay the registration fee prior to the start of tryouts. This is especially true for players moving up from the Cross-Ice program to Mites and can use a season to learn to play in a more controlled atmosphere. Please notify the appropriate coordinator if you do not plan to attend tryouts so that you son/daughter will be placed on a team. 5. Mite C Change –Hingham Youth Hockey will continue the Mite C division in-house for the coming season. By running our own Mite C division we can provide a better program for all the parents and players involved. Specifically, we are able to focus on more skill development for the players and also provide set times for games and practices and rid ourselves of 5:50 a.m. games in Bridgewater, Brockton and Hobomock. The intent is to have 4-5 teams at the Mite C level and have them play games amongst themselves with Referees and timekeepers. All Mite C players will receive their own game shirts. 6. Policy Regarding Players on Multiple Teams or Multiple Sports: In the event your child plays on another Hockey team or plays another sport which conflicts with HYH practices or games, it is the expectation of Hingham Youth Hockey that such absences from HYH practices and/or games will be handled evenly and fairly between the multiple teams or sports. HYH does encourage our participants to play other sports. Conflicts do arise when parents do not respect the time and effort that is put into a team by the other players and coaches. Parents are required to notify the head coach in advance of such absences. HYH asks parents to respect the time and effort put in by the players, coaches, and organization and to be fair to both teams when making decisions on what game or practice to attend. Absence from a HYH game because of another program practice is not a reasonable excuse. Neither is an absence due to another program game that same day that does not conflict. This is especially important at the A levels as roster spots at that level are only for those who share an equal commitment to HYH. At all levels, players are expected to evenly split absences from all of their respective teams. If your child plays on another hockey team and he/she will not be able to play in 75% of the games and practices, please let the level coordinator know. Failure to attend 75% of the games and practices can result in a suspension and/or termination from the team without refund. This action will be at the discretion of the team coaching staff and the level coordinator. Registration All players must be registered and have paid the registration fee before they will be allowed on the ice for any tryouts. Players choosing not to tryout must pay their registration fee before they will be assigned to a team. Players who register late and do not participate in tryouts will be placed on a C Team at the applicable level if space is available. All HYH fees must be paid in full by August 15, 2010 or the players may be removed from their team and another player assigned that spot. If payments are not complete by September 1st, or if the player is not already on an HYH approved payment plan, that player will not be allowed on the ice for any games, practices or skills sessions. Payment plans are available, but they must be approved by the VP of Financial Affairs. Full or partial scholarships are available based on financial need. Please contact the President for more information. If you are unable to register online there will be registration forms in the HYH box in the pro shop at Pilgrim Arena. Players must be registered for the coming season before they are assigned a tryout number on the first night of tryouts. No player will be allowed on the ice without a registration form and a paid registration fee. Registrations will be taken during tryouts; however, we highly encourage everyone to register on-line (or during registration night). Any balances due from the 2009-2010 season must be paid in full or any player from the immediate family may not be allowed to tryout. Girls are welcome to play in HYH through all levels and we encourage this; however, if your daughter intends to play with the girls’ only team, please register on the HGH site at www.hinghamgirlshockey.com. Girls may be registered for both programs, but must pay full fees to both programs. If more than 2 players are registered, the total number of players in both programs will be calculated to figure out program discounts for multiple children. Goaltenders In order to avoid any confusion regarding the status of goaltenders playing half time, or full time, depending on their team selection, we are requesting that the goaltenders parents send an email with their intentions to Jack Diamond (jdiamond@jackdiamondlaw.com) if your child intends on trying out for goalie.
Registration Fees and Dues:
Third-Child Discount Program: In the event a family registers 3 or more children in any HYH Program (Cross-Ice through Midget), Hingham Youth Hockey requires that the 3rd child and each successive child pay total registration fees and dues of $475 only. Please note that the $475 will apply to the least expensive level first. Registration Fee and Dues Policy Registration fee and all past due fees must be paid in full in order to tryout. The registration fee is non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be deferred to another season. Please contact the VP of Financial Affairs prior to April 20 if your son/daughter does not intend to play in HYH and a full refund for monies paid will be made provided your son/daughter did not participate in tryouts. If your player registers for the 2010-2011 season and participates in tryouts, it is expected that they will be playing for HYH next season. Any player who tries out, and than decides not to play HYH, will not be eligible for a refund, transfer or deferment of the 2010-2011 registration fees. All fees and dues must be paid according to the payment schedule located on the website registration page, in order to practice and play. Players will not be placed on team rosters and will not be allowed to skate until they are paid in full. Players not paid in full by August 1 may be placed on a waiting list and their spot on the team may be filled. i. Player moves out of Hingham. Registration fee is not refundable, dues are refunded on a pro-rated basis based on games left of schedule. ii. Player injury or medical reason does not allow them to play for 4 weeks or more. Registration fee is not refundable, dues may be refunded on a pro-rated basis based on games left of schedule. Cross-Ice registration fees and dues are fully refundable (until Oct. 15) if child does not play. Coaching Applications Anyone interested in coaching next year is invited to complete a Coaching Application form, USA Hockey Release, Code of Conduct form, Coaching Ethics form and CORI form contained in this packet. Even if you are coaching now, please fill one out for next season so we know what level(s) you are interested in coaching. Please disregard this notice if you completed one online. All completed coaching applications should be forwarded to Neil Hernberg by April 12, 2010: Hingham Youth Hockey 2010-2011 Hockey Tryouts 1. Players are expected to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the first tryout session to check in and be assigned a tryout number. At the Mite and Squirt levels, please note on the schedule what hour your skater is expected to skate based on last name. At the PeeWee and Bantam levels, the scheduled hours will be organized by the player’s year of birth. A player must be registered for the 2010-2011 season before he/she will be given a number. Numbers should be pinned on the back of each player’s shirt. Save the tryout number for the entire tryout process. The player must skate with the same number in all sessions.
2. Skaters cannot wear shirts with their names on the back. Have the skater either wear a shirt with no name or turn their hockey shirts inside out so the name is not visible. 3. Players wishing to be in the C level do not need to attend tryouts, but they do need to register and pay the registration fee prior to the start of tryouts. This is especially true for players moving up from Cross-Ice to Mites and can use a season to learn to play in a more controlled atmosphere. Please notify the appropriate coordinator if you do not plan to attend tryouts. 4. Given the large number of skaters, we have no choice but to start promptly on the ice. If you are late, your child may miss the opportunity to skate and be judged in all drills. 5. Attendance at the tryout sessions is mandatory. If for some reason, e.g. injury, illness, etc., a player cannot make a tryout; you must call or email the respective level coordinator and tryout coordinator immediately. Failure of a player to attend tryouts complicates the evaluation process, and may impede the proper evaluation of the affected player, along with other skaters, for the appropriate team. HYH is not obligated to “hold” or “guarantee” any specific slots for players unable to attend tryouts for any reason. In fact, failure to attend the tryouts (unexcused absences) will automatically place a player on a “C” level team. Recognizing that a player does not have control over an illness, injury, or other uncontrollable events, HYH will do its best to address the situation. Even with this intent, HYH is not obligated to hold a specific slot. Excused Tryout Evaluation Process – If the final selection of players has not occurred, the Tryout Coordinator will contact the Level Coordinator at the current level of the affected “excused” player. The skater’s current Level Coordinator will consult the skater’s current coach, other coaches at the level and the prior level coordinator for an assessment of the of the player’s skating skills, hockey skills, Team work and situational decision making abilities. Based upon the information collected from the above and any on-ice evaluations during tryouts, the Tryout and Coaching Coordinator will meet with the 5 judges to develop a consensus decision for the appropriate level of the player. This selection process will be led by the Tryout or Coaching Coordinator and the level coordinator will act as the record keeper. If notification occurs after the final selection of players has been made, the skater will be automatically assigned to a “C” level team. 6. Tryouts take priority over practice. All players are required to attend tryouts and disregard scheduled practices that conflict with the tryout schedule. 7. Skaters on the “Bubble” – if during the evaluation process, consensus is difficult for the final slot (or 2), and a tie is occurring for the borderline (“Bubble Skaters”) players, the following process will be used to reach resolution: 1. If a tie exists between two skaters and one skater is a second year (returning to the level) the tie will go to the returning 2nd year player. 2. If the “tied skaters” are the same age, the Level Coordinator will re-probe the evaluators’ opinions on the 4 skill categories: Skating Session, Hockey Skills, Team Work and Situational Decision making to reach a consensus. 3. If a ties still exists the level coordinator may consult the current coach evaluations and/or the skating scores from Phase I. 8. Attrition – Open Slot/New Player Moves into Hingham – After the tryout process, it is possible that a spot may open up on a “B” or “A” team(s) due to attrition, a player moving out of town, etc. In addition, a new skater may move into Hingham after the conclusion of tryouts. Playing for an “A” or ”B” team in another system does not guarantee the player a similar slot in HYH, if the player misses the tryout process. Any skaters moving into town after tryouts will automatically be assigned to a “C” team. If a slot has opened up at the “B” or “A” level, the following process will be used to fill the opening: After practices have begun, the level coordinator will ask the feeding level coaches (i.e.: if it is a “B” slot, the feeding coaches are the “C” coaches) for their choices (consensus) to be evaluated. The coach of team which needs a player, the level coordinator and the coaching coordinator will all view the choices in a game or practice setting and come to a majority decision as to the player selected to be moved. If the decision is down to multiple players the tie goes to the child in their second year at the level. The open slot is to go to the best all around skater and jockey players from the feeding level using the same guidelines used during the Phase 2 scrimmage process. There will not be a separate mini-tryout for the open slot.
Age Levels: League Birth Year
THE TRYOUT PROCESS The tryout process has been designed to provide a fair and objective evaluation of all skaters. The players are given an opportunity to compete against each other for placements on teams. There are two phases to the Tryout Process. The first phase (Phase I) concentrates on skating and skill evaluation. At the Mite and Squirt levels, Phrase I will be conducted in sessions separate from the Phase II hockey skills. At the PeeWee and Bantam levels, the Phase I skill assessments will be incorporated into the same hours as the Phase II hockey skills. The second phase (Phase II) focuses on overall hockey skills. The mix of drills and evaluation criteria may vary by level (Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, and Midget) to reflect the differences in the game at each level. Cross-Ice players are not required to tryout. There will be an evaluation session in September to better equalize the teams. Judges for the tryouts are selected by the Coaching Committee. Most judges either have been or are currently coaches within our program. At least four off-ice judges will evaluate the skater on the criteria listed below. By having at least four different judges, we will have different scores for the skater, a fairly significant basis for evaluation. We attempt to select judges for a given level who do not have children trying out at that level. If a judge happens to have a child skating at that level, the judge is not allowed to evaluate his own child. HYH is committed to an unbiased tryout process – we will only ask an individual with a child at the level to judge if a scheduled judge is unable to attend without notice. A judge’s child will receive scores from four judges and a fifth set of scores will be averaged from the other judges’ scores. At the PeeWee and Bantam levels, players can indicate that they would like to tryout for defense or forward positions. Players who indicate that they are defensemen will be evaluated for their defensive skills in the scrimmage portion of the tryout and be given special consideration when the A and B teams are chosen. Please don’t have your son/daughter indicate that they want to tryout for defense unless they fully intend to play that position for the season. In addition, please note that even if a player designates a position, it is the coaches discretion as to where players play.
PHASE I At the Mite and Squirt levels the skating skill drills will focus on balance, inside and outside edge control (stopping, turning, etc.) transition (forwards to backwards), speed and puck control. Sample drills that support this focus are (but not limited to): § Box drill – (forward to backward & reverse transition) § Big Circle and tight turn (both directions) § Stopping / Cross over starts (both directions) § Overspeed Drills Each skater’s gross accumulation of scores will be used to determine seeding for the second phase, the scrimmage sessions. A skater’s ranking from the first phase of skating skills does not assure a skater of an A, B or C position. The ranking serves only as a staging mechanism for seeding the players for the scrimmage format and as a potential tiebreaker during team selection. At the PeeWee and Bantam levels, the players will be put through a series of drills at the beginning of their scheduled hours to assess their skills. During the same hour the players will continue directly into the Phase II scrimmage sessions. Player tryout numbers will be posted as soon as possible after the Phase I session on the HYH website (www.hyhockey.com), notifying players as to the date and time to return for the Phase II session. At the PeeWee and Bantam levels player numbers will be posted for call backs to the follow up Phase II sessions. Despite the subtle changes to the process at the PeeWee and Bantam levels, every player trying out will still have every opportunity to make the A and B teams. If you do not have access to the internet please call your respective level coordinator. PHASE II This phase is comprised of 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 hockey sessions where skaters are assigned to a line number and skate a number of one minute shifts. (Checking will be allowed at the Bantam level only.) Judges will be instructed to evaluate the players on the following skills: · Skating Skills – Speed, inside and outside edges; stopping; quick starts; transition forward to backward; etc. · Hockey skills – Puck control; shot; stick-handling skills; giving and receiving passes. · Team work – Hold onto the puck or makes the pass to the open player; knowing when to shoot or pass. · Situational/Decision making – Ability to read developing play; anticipates opponent’s and teammate’s next move; positional hockey vs. scrum. Generally, the weighting of each of these categories will change at each level (Mites, Squirts, PeeWees, Bantams, and Midgets) with the change in the style of play. As example please see the following:
At the Mite level, skating and basic hockey skills will be weighted more than at the upper levels where teamwork and situational play become more important as a skill. Please note that numerical scores are not generally used by the judges at this stage. “A”, “B”, “C” LEVEL SELECTION and PLAYER NOTIFICATION After the completion of each Phase II session, the judges, tryout coordinator and level coordinators will finalize selections for the A, B and C levels based on their overall evaluations compiled from that day’s session. Please be advised that some players are selected for teams after only one Phase II session and those players may or may not be invited back at the level coordinators discretion. In addition, players maybe called for more or less scrimmage sessions than their peers based on judges’ and level coordinator’s recommendations. Within 30 days of the completion of tryouts for their respective level, the level coordinator will notify the parent(s) of each player by e-mail, web or mail indicating next season’s level. Of note, please be advised that Hingham Youth Hockey has changed a provision regarding player placement. In previous years, a player returning to the same level who was an “A” or “B” player could not be moved down to “C” for the second year at the same level. This is no longer true. No team placements are ever guaranteed based upon the previous year’s placement. Prior year placements will be considered, however, as tiebreakers between equally ranked players. Selection of coaches for each team will follow shortly after that. Head coaches will be selected by the Coaching Committee. Coaching candidates will be evaluated on the basis of previous experience, hockey sense and skills, time availability, enthusiasm, organizational skills, etc. Once coaches are selected, the coaches at their respective levels (B or C) will meet to select their players, if there are multiple teams at that specific level. Once the players have been selected, they will contacted by their coach. Hingham Youth Hockey cannot accommodate all requests to pair up neighbors, friends, etc. on the same team. The teams are built on a balanced basis through a consensus process involving the coaching coordinator, level coordinator, and the head coaches. The one exception is at the Instructional level. If requests are made in advance, HYH will make every attempt to pair up skaters without jeopardizing the balance of the teams. BEHAVIOR CODE It should be noted that inappropriate behavior by a skater or parent on or off ice during the tryouts will be reflected in a “marking down” of a skater’s overall score. Inappropriate behavior includes, but is not limited to penalty situations such as illegal checking, elbowing, tripping, and harassment of other skaters on or off the ice and use of foul language. The “ZERO TOLERANCE” policy is in effect.
